Grab life by the balls and RUN

A few weeks ago i made what is probably going to be one of the biggest decisions of my life and handed my notice in from my bar job to become completely self employed. It was something i’d been considering for a long time and it’s also something i’ve wanted to  do for a little over 4 years.

I know anyone else who has been in this position understands me when i say it’s TERRIFYING, you’re giving up the ‘norm’ to do something that is very uncertain, not completely stable or secure. Because it’s not necessarily a ‘traditional’ run of the mill job (blogging, instagramming, bigcartel-ing) it’s a terrifying experience of not knowing if people are going to support you or tell you you’re being daft, so you really have to think for yourself and decide what YOU want to do.

I’m literally always saying to people (including my own mum) that the worlds your oyster, because it really is. You can honestly do anything you want to IF you want it enough and are willing to work your butt off to get it. It wont come easy, you will not just wake up one morning and have it all figured out, it takes time. As soon as i opened my shop online in 2013 i knew that was what i wanted to do, i loved being able to do everything myself, from the drawings to the creation of the t-shirts to the social aspect. After i started that no job ever seemed to fit, i never worked somewhere and felt fully passionate as my store at home was so much more fulfilling. I’ve had some absolutely wonderful work colleagues along the way though so i definitely appreciate that!

Being someone that has suffered with anxiety for a lot of my late teenage years, i do also find this was a major problem when it came to doing what i wanted to do. It would often get in the way of exciting plans which meant i was missing out on amazing opportunities. I’d also go through phases where i believed i COULDN’T do things, or wasn’t good enough. You need to not listen to that tiny voice in your head telling you these things, and do each step one at a time until you’re completely ready – This also links to my post regarding taking opportunities which you can read HERE.

As i was researching this topic i found one particular article that basically shat on anyone that wanted to ‘follow their dreams’, stating that they should just find joy in working hard and becoming a parent. They stated that people are just constantly trying to find a purpose behind why they are here and not concentrating on the ‘real’ things. Of course, for some people working hard and creating a family is what they’re passionate about and what they strive for, however for others this is not. I feel as though people often think if you get one job you should just stick with it and work your way up for better pay etc, even if you hate it and it’s making you mentally and physically unwell, Why? how is this normal in any way? it baffles me. We all have ONE life, we never get a chance to do this again, why is it so wrong to try so many different things you’re passionate about? be a painter, be a writer, a singer or travel the world and see every city you’ve dreamed of, be anything and do anything you want as long as you’re willing to put the time and effort into it.

I know it’s not as easy as it sounds when i say you can quit that job you hate to do something you’re passionate about, i know there’s other things people have to think about before they make decisions that will change their life, but you CAN still do it. You do need to be stable and have enough funds to keep you going so save up as much money as you can, sell items you no longer use/clothes you no longer wear and keep the money safe as something to fall back on.

All i’m trying to say is that it is possible to do what you want to do, don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t or make you feel like you can’t. You control your life, nobody else. If you want to do something, do it.

Nothing can stop you.

  1. Yes!! Well done, you’re doing the right thing! Everyone should lead the life they dream about, if it isn’t the status quo and people are negative about the decision screw them!! 😁😁
